چکیده

INTRODUCTION Fast spin echo (FSE) sequence [1] has been widely used in various MR applications, which, like other sequences, can suffer from the inhomogeneous B1 at high field. Parallel transmission of RF pulses [2, 3] has been shown to be quite effective in correcting B1 inhomogeneity. However, no FSE application with parallel transmission has been seen in the literature yet primarily due to the lack of method for designing parallel transmit pulses for FSE that satisfy the CPMG condition [4]. In this paper, we first show that designing excitation and refocusing pulse pair for FSE is a joint design problem. Then we formulate the design problem as a novel optimal control problem, where the optimal pulse pair is sought jointly to drive the magnetization vector to its desired state while maintaining the CPMG condition. Bloch simulation results are shown to demonstrate the superior performance of the pulses designed by the proposed method to those from conventional methods.

Designing RF Refocusing Pulses for Parallel Transmit Spin Echo Sequences

INTRODUCTION Parallel transmission of RF pulses [1, 2] has shown great potential in B1 inhomogeneity correction at high fields [3]. Most of the existing applications of parallel transmission, however, have been restricted to only gradient echo due to lack of systematic design of parallel transmit refocusing pulses. The difficulty of designing such pulses lies in that 1) the large flip angle nat...

Fast SE/TSE/RARE, refocusing with low flip angle pulses

1 Introduction The spin echo is a fundamental principle (1) that can be used for magnetic resonance imaging. Spin echo techniques are characterized by at least two rf-pulses. The first rf-pulse acts as an excitation pulse that converts longitudinal magnetization into transverse magnetization, and a second rf-pulse after TE/2 is used as a refocusing pulse that (partially) inverts the accumulated...

Phase relaxed localized excitation pulses for inner volume fast spin echo imaging

PURPOSE To design multidimensional spatially selective radiofrequency (RF) pulses for inner volume imaging (IVI) with three-dimensional (3D) fast spin echo (FSE) sequences. Enhanced background suppression is achieved by exploiting particular signal properties of FSE sequences. THEORY AND METHODS The CPMG condition dictates that echo amplitudes will rapidly decrease if a 90° phase difference b...

Effect of Low Refocusing Angle in T1-Weighted Spin Echo and Fast Spin Echo MRI on Low-Contrast Detectability: A Comparative Phantom Study at 1.5 and 3 Tesla

MRI tissue contrast is not well preserved at high field. In this work, we used a phantom with known, intrinsic contrast (3.6%) for model tissue pairs to test the effects of low angle refocusing pulses and magnetization transfer from adjacent slices on intrinsic contrast at 1.5 and 3 Tesla. Only T1-weighted spin echo sequences were tested since for such sequences the contrast loss, tissue heatin...

Is TrueFISP a gradient-echo or a spin-echo sequence?

It is commonly accepted that TrueFISP (balanced FFE, FIESTA) belongs to the class of gradient-echo (GRE) sequences. GRE sequences are sensitive to dephasing effects of the transverse magnetization between the excitation pulse and echo acquisition, and phase coherence is only established directly after and before excitation pulses. However, an analysis of the phase evolution of transverse magnet...
